Depending on the amount of usage and capacity, most geysers need a power usage of 1KW to 3KW. We understand that the focus for any consumer is utility, energy-efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and most importantly, safety! Keeping all this in mind, we have consolidated our top picks with detailed reviews below. Feel free to go through the entire list and choose the one that checks all boxes for your needs.

1. Best Overall: AO Smith HSE-SDS-15

  • Energy Efficiency: 4 Star BEE
  • Energy Consumption: 2000 Watt
  • Capacity: 15 Liters
  • Temperature Range: 25 – 27 degrees C
  • Pressure Capacity: 8 Bars
  • Warranty: 7 years on tank, 4 years on glass coated element & 2 years on product

AO Smith is a leading brand in the US that has now impacted the Indian customers with its recent HSE-SDS water heater. There are two models to choose from- one with a capacity of 15L and another with 25L.

Both these models feature stainless steel, anti-corrosive construction, and glass coated to trap the heat and reduce lime accumulation risk.

The geyser is known for its durable and energy-efficient construction, featuring an innovative Double Glass Line technology suitable for heating and purifying hard water. This makes the heater a great option for the Indian market, where the municipal water is often full of impurities.

We found the water heater to be very intuitive and user-friendly. You can adjust the temperature via the temperature regulator placed on the front-side of the heater. The smart Auto thermal feature automatically cuts off the heat if the temperature exceeds a specific limit. There is also a safety valve on the side to control the water pressure – it releases excessive water and cuts off the water supply if the tank is full or reaches a pre-set limit.

Moving on to the design, the AO Smith model is compact, chic, and glossy. The body is lightweight, portable, and easy to install. The company also offers installation services in a few cities. The inner tank is metal-coated, with a rust-free stainless-steel core and an anode rod for quick and consistent heating.

5. Best for Home Use: Havells Monza EC

  • Energy Efficiency: 5 Star BEE
  • Energy Consumption: 2000 Watt
  • Capacity: 10 Litres
  • Pressure Rating: 8 Bars
  • Warranty: 1 year on tank & 2 years on product

Havells Monza EC water heater is one of the most popular geysers in India. According to us, the best part of the Havells Monza EC is the time it takes to heat water. Within 6-7 minutes, you can get around 8-9 liters of hot water. That is fast.

The product has a minimalist design and looks very sophisticated. The indicators are large enough to get a good view, and the temperature dial has a premium finish. The adjustable temperature knob allows you to decide the water temperature. It ranges from 25 degrees Celsius to 75 degrees Celsius.

Geysers in India have to address the issue of hard water. The Feroglas TM technology used by Havells for its tank makes it highly resistant to hard water effects and increases the tank’s life. The IPX-4 technology is used to protect the electrical parts of the geyser from water splashes. This helps in your safety, especially for children.

During testing, we also found that the geyser stops heating water due to thermal cutoff provision once the required temperature is attained. This helps save electricity as well as keeps the geyser safe. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency has given it a 4-star rating.

A thick PUF insulation avoids radiant heat loss. As heat is not lost, the amount of energy needed to heat the water is reduced drastically, and energy efficiency increases. Incoloy glass coated heating element is resistant to hard water and high-temperature oxidation and carbonization. This increases its life.

Whirlflow technology avoids direct contact between hot water and incoming cold water. This avoids energy loss, leads to faster heating of water, and saves energy. We observed a 20-25% increase in hot water output.

A multifunction safety valve protects the tank from pressure built up on the outside and the inside of the tank. This model is available in larger capacities too. You get 35-liter, 50-litre, and 100-liter models.

  • Energy Efficiency: N/A
  • Energy Consumption: 3000 Watt
  • Capacity: 3 Litres
  • Pressure Rating: 6.5 Bars
  • Warranty: 2 years

Crompton Greaves Solarium Plus is a water heater with a stainless steel body. Therefore, it heats water efficiently and fast. The tank has a Nano polymer coating, which gives a smooth finish. The outer body of Crompton Greaves Solarium Plus is made of ABS plastic. Its design is created to add beauty to modern aesthetic bathrooms.

The geyser is in-built with copper coils for efficient heating. These are engineered to last long and remain unaffected by power-cuts and voltage fluctuations. These well-engineered coils are the secret behind its quick heating mechanism without any heat loss in the process.

The tank is provided with a glass coating. This makes the product scratch-free and also prevents rusting. It makes the product last longer. The maintenance costs are meager. The company claims that the water heated this way is safe on the skin.

To ensure consumer safety, Crompton Greaves has installed a power cut-off system in this geyser. Known popularly as the ‘thermal cut-out feature,’ the device cuts off power-supply as soon as water temperature exceeds the safe limit.

The device has been designed, including special features like a fusible plug and safety valve to control water pressure as and when necessary. This ensures usage safety for customers.

The company has retained its reputation for energy-efficient devices with this product. The only drawback is that the customers have to get the product installed on their own. They will need to arrange the other items needed for installation, such as a 3-pin plug, steel pipes, etc.

This is a cost-effective buy. If proper care is taken during installation, this product will give service for many years.

Pros
Pros
  • Easy to install and safe to use

Cons

8. High Storage Capacity: Longway Hotstar

  • Energy Efficiency: 5 Star BEE
  • Energy Consumption: 2000 Watt
  • Capacity: 25 Litres
  • Warranty: 2.5 years on tank & 1 year on product

The Longway Hotstar 25 Ltr geyser caters to the budget-friendly section of the Indian geyser market. It is priced very competitively and comes with a few attractive features.
At first glance, the geyser isn’t striking to look at but is very sturdy by design, and the ABS body, though plastic, is very durable.

The heavy-duty heating element is rust-resistant and prevents scale build-up, thus providing longevity to the geyser. Longway also provides a 2-year warranty on the product.

While the capacity of 25 litres looks good on paper for a storage water heater and should be enough for most consumers, the 2000W heating element takes around 20 minutes to get the water up to temperature. Most competing geysers in the Indian market have a higher wattage and are far quicker at getting the job done.

In our testing, we found the heating to be slow, and at times, the geyser took 25-30 minutes to bring the water up to temperature. We presume this will be longer in peak winters, but it shouldn’t be a problem for those who don’t mind waiting a while.

The geyser also comes with a visible thermostat, which helps determine the tank’s exact temperature – a non-essential but quaint feature that improves accessibility and ease of use. With a BEE 5 Star Energy Efficiency rating and a comparatively low wattage heating element, this geyser is also very energy-efficient and cost-effective.

Unfortunately, Longway does not assist with the installation, and the large and rather unwieldy geyser took quite an effort to install correctly. As is the case with most local Indian brands, Longway also suffers from after-sale support, and getting through to customer care can quite often be a very tedious affair.

The Longway Hotstar 25 L storage geyser is a viable option for consumers in the market for a sturdy and durable device which is quite a power-efficient and gets the job done.

Pros
Pros
  • Energy Efficient
  • Durable build quality
  • Competitively Priced
Cons
Cons
  • Slow Heating
  • Poor after-sale service

Talking about the advanced technical features, the Racold Eterno 2 comes with a Smart Bath Logic function, which allows the user to adjust the heat and mode of bathing via a regulator placed at the lower half of the heater’s body. It not only allows you to customize the bath but also save almost 40% of electricity.

Also, the Smart Mix feature uses an anode rod to heat the water and a special deflector to ensure that the process is slow and consistent to keep the water heated for long. The vertical mounted design is easy to install and perfect for high rise apartments. It is one of the most energy-efficient water heaters on our list, guaranteeing a great start to your mornings.

And while the geyser is slow to heat up, it sure retains the heat for a longer duration. Also, the device is energy efficient and saves 10% water and the Smart Mix Feature. The company offers free installation for a limited period. Note that this does not include plumbing and pipe fittings.

Pros
Pros
  • The compact structure can be vertically and horizontally mounted according to the manual

  • The tank though lightweight has a large water capacity sufficient for the entire family
Cons
Cons

10. Cheapest Option: AO Smith EWS-3

  • Energy Efficiency: N/A
  • Energy Consumption: 3000 Watt
  • Capacity: 3 Litres
  • Pressure Capacity: 8 Bars
  • Warranty: 5 years on tank & 2 years on product

This geyser impressed us with its design and build quality. The outer body of AO Smith EWS-3 is made of rustproof plastic. While we expected plastic to cheapen the product’s appearance, the plastic used here is of outstanding quality. The lustrous finish makes it one of a kind and ensures that it stands out amongst its competitors.

The AO Smith EWS-3 also comes with an oblong design that looks very modern and should seamlessly fit most modern washrooms. The geyser is also perfect for use in the kitchen as its small footprint allows it to be inconspicuous.

Besides the rustproof exterior, this geyser also comes with a glass-coated heating element. The glass coating prevents scale formation and prolongs life, even in areas with a hard water supply. The heating element also has a warranty for 3 years.

While AO Smith claims that the product heats water within five seconds of switching on, in our usage, we found the time taken to be around a few minutes. While not as quick as claimed, this is still very good and should satisfy most consumers looking for instant water heaters.

It must also be mentioned that AO Smith doesn’t provide any assistance with the installation of their product. Still, the product is light and easy to set up except that the two required connector pipes and the 3 pin adapter are also not provided in the box. Seeing AO Smith skimping on such bare necessities leaves a bad taste in the mouth and hampers the after-sale experience.

AO Smith has done a good job with the design and build quality, but the overall after-sale experience leaves one wanting. Overall this is a very good offering at a price, and consumers looking for an instant water heater that is sleek to look at and are very durable should find this to their liking.

Pros
Pros
  • Affordable pricing
  • Decent design and build quality
  • Long warranty period
Cons
Cons
  • Lack of installation assistance
  • No connector pipes in the box

11. Kenstar Jacuzzi

  • Energy Efficiency: 5 Star
  • Energy Consumption: 2000 Watt
  • Capacity: 15 Litres
  • Pressure Rating: 8 Bars
  • Warranty: 6 years of tank & 2 years on product

We found Kenstar Jacuzzi as an ideal product for a family of four. The higher storage capacity and faster heating make sure you quickly get a bucket of hot water. And since it is a 5 star rated product, it saves a lot of electricity (up to 50%).

Heat Retention Technology (HRT) prevents heat loss and makes sure the water remains hot for longer durations. The stainless steel tank is covered with insulated plastic, which helps retain heat and keep the water warm for a long time.

During our tests, we found the geyser uniformly heating the water. The three heat settings also worked as stated. The thermal cut-out facility prevents the overheating of the geyser. A fusible plug is also used as a safety measure. The plastic body avoids any shocks.

The compact yet aesthetic design of the geyser makes it a good choice for your bathrooms. You can even install it outside your house as its plastic ABS body is completely rust-free, apart from being unbreakable. ABS makes the body light-weighted yet resistant to aqueous acids as well as to alkalis.

This geyser is suitable for buildings having up to 8 floors. We found no problem when subjecting the geyser to hard water. Also, it can be mounted horizontally too. The two lights indicating the cut-off facility and heating are bright enough to be easily visible.

Installation is paid and not free as other competitors are providing. But it is not a cause of concern as the installation charges are nominal. The product makes up for it. Also, though it is of 15-liter capacity, it is fairly light-weighted as compared to others.

It is available in two models – a 15-liter one and a 25-liter one. Higher capacity comes with a slightly higher price. Considering the price of the competitors, features of this product, and brand name, we found this product to be a value for money.

Overall, we felt it has an apt name, ‘Jacuzzi.’

Pros
Pros
  • 5-star BEE rated
  • Higher storage capacity at a lesser price
  • Unbreakable and rust-free body
  • Thermal cutoff facility to avoid overheating
  • Heat Retention Technology (HRT)
Cons
Cons
  • Suitable only for buildings up to 8 floors
  • Installation is not free

Best Geyser Brands in India

There are so many brands competing with each other, creating better products every day. With this plethora of choices, selecting the best geyser in India may become a confusing task. Thus, to help you eliminate this confusion, we will be enlisting some of the well-reputed brands that make excellent water geysers in India. Not just that, they’re best when it comes to the after-sales services, if and when needed.

So, shall we begin with the list?

1. AO Smith

AO Smith Water Products Company is a pioneer in the production of glass-lined water heaters in India. The novel features of its heaters make the brand leader in the geyser segment.

The geyser models are attractive, colourful, and well crafted. The interiors of its geysers are corrosion-proof. The Blue Diamond® glass-lined technology, along with the ‘stainless-steel core’ anode rod system, protects the inner container from scaling, prolonging the container’s life.

Its inner containers’ pressure rating is up to 8 bars, considered very high in the industry. The heavy-gauge mild-steel, safety valves, and Blue Diamond®technology provide freedom from water leakage. For its dual heating elements, water gets heated faster. Also, each element acts as a backup for the other.

AO SMITH offers the longest warranty in the Industry – e.g., 5 to 10 years on the inner container and two years on the heater. This warranty is extendable to 4 years if the product gets registered within the first 60 days of purchase. Its geysers have a 5-star BEE efficiency rating.

The company currently doesn’t manufacture gas water heaters. All its water heaters are electric-operated. But that doesn’t minimize anyway the fan-following AO Smith has gained over the years with its superior technology.

2. Crompton

Crompton is a renowned electronics brand. The company manufactures and markets a huge number of consumer goods. The products include car tyre inflators, ceiling fans, wall-mounted fans, luminaries, and LED tube lights. It is one of the top brands in the water heating segment. Its water heaters are of many kinds, e.g., instant and storage, horizontal, vertical, etc.

The geysers have sophisticated designs. Their beauty adds to the bathroom aesthetics. Their inner tanks are made up of stainless steel, which is a Crompton exclusive. The system uses a copper heating element of high-quality. A high-quality Incoloy assists in superior heating and heat retention.

Its geysers’ pressure handling capacity is yet to be matched by its competitions, with models like Magna having a pressure handling capacity of 10 bars. Also, Crompton geysers are one step ahead in the market by offering the ‘Triple Safeguards’ from the risks of electricity, temperature, and pressure as described below:

  1. A fusible plug protects the geyser from over current.
  2. A thermal cutout provides safety from hot-water burns. It shuts heating when water is overheated.
  3. A safety valve flushes out excess water if the pressure crosses the danger mark.

However, Crompton doesn’t manufacture solar or gas geysers. Also, its geysers do not come with remote or app control. But if one doesn’t swear by smart features and is looking for a strong and safe geyser with good heating and heat retention capacity, one should preferably go for the Crompton brand.

3. Bajaj

Bajaj Electricals manufacture some of the best home appliances for the Indian market. Bajaj geysers are more compact and energy-efficient as compared to geysers from the other Indian brands. The company offers all kinds of geysers, be it simple immersion heaters to huge capacity storage water heaters. Also, Bajaj has brought a new type of gas heaters into the market, which functions on PNG/CNG.

The geysers have a stylish body shell. Their novel neon indicators declare the status of the water heating on the display panel. They are also easy to install. Some geysers on offer can be converted to floor mounting from the walls; thus, flexibility in mounting is on offer if one decides to fix the geyser to a different system bathroom in the future. The injected cellular PUF keeps water in a heated state for a long.

The geysers have 5-star BEE ratings, meaning they consume less energy than others, so the electricity consumption is low. With slight improvement on the reheating time of water, the brand can easily sit on the chair of the brand-leader, considering its performance graph and market share, along with the pricing of products.

4. Havells

A well recognized and renowned brand of Indian origin, Havells prides itself on its local outreach and customer service. With over 7500 dealers and 500 exclusive brand showrooms in the country, Havells is the first Fast Moving Electrical Goods (FMEG) Company to offer doorstep service.

The company has combined its massive advantage in customer outreach with the latest technology to push its products in a highly competitive market. Havells is also committed to the “Make in India” program and has 9 manufacturing facilities in India.

Specializing in electrical equipment, Havells utilizes its expertise to ensure the geysers it produces are high on safety and protection. Havells also offers a wide range of water heating products, including Solar Water Heaters, Instant Water Heaters, and Storage Water Heaters.

Havells geysers use FeroGlas technology that provides durability to the geyser and is built with a single weld design with a heavy-duty anode rod to prevent corrosion.

5. Kenstar

An Indian company that believes in providing premium products at the optimum price, Kenstar has quickly become one of the most sought after water heater brands in the country. Despite being available at very competitive prices, Kenstar geysers are known for their energy efficiency and longevity.

Most Kenstar products also come with long warranty periods (6 years), which provide a sense of security to the consumer while also throwing light on its confidence in its longevity and reliability.

Although Kenstar has good customer outreach in larger cities, consumers from tier 3 cities and smaller towns may find service hard to come by as Kenstar’s presence in that sphere remains lacking. Kenstar is expanding rapidly, though and at present has over 425 service franchises.

6. Racold

A sub-brand of the Italian corporation Ariston Thermo, Racold has shown remarkable growth over the past few decades to become one of India’s leading geyser manufacturers.

Recognized by the Trust Research Advisory (TRA) as “India’s Most Trusted Water Heater Brand” in 2016 and recipient of the BEE Energy Award for 9 years in a row, Racold couples its strong market hold an emphasis on energy efficiency and eco-friendly technology.

Racold has incorporated its patented Silver Ion technology into its geysers, which uses silver ions to disinfect and sterilize water. The titanium plus offering involves coating the geysers’ interiors with a specially designed titanium and steel alloy where the titanium layer prevents internal corrosion and steel extends the durability of the product.

Racold is also known for its energy efficiency, an example of its Power Saving alarm feature, which goes off if the Geyser is turned on but not in use. Most Racold products are also certified 5 Star BEE Energy Efficient.

Geysers / Instant Water Heaters: The Buyer’s Guide

Alongside air conditioners and washing machines, geysers have become something that most people living in India need, especially those in the north, where winter temperature dips to 3° C and below.

How to select water heater

Purchasing a geyser is not a simple task at all. There are many brands available, and the result they produce is the same. What is the differentiation that will help you when you want to buy one, even if you have read our detailed reviews of the best water heaters?

How do you find which one is most suited for your home? As we have written above, there are many types of brands and geysers available in the market. But which is the one that is perfect for your needs?

Well, that is the reason we are here with a comprehensive buying guide that explains everything you need to know about a water heater or a geyser. Let’s begin!

Important Components of A Geyser

A geyser is, thankfully, a straightforward appliance that is also known as a water heater. It has three main components – a heating coil known as an element, a reservoir or tank, and a thermostat that turns the device on/off. Let us look at these three components, and then we shall turn an eye to other considerations.

1. Heating Coil

The heating coil is made from metal wire with high resistance. There are a variety of alloys used for this purpose. Older geysers used a Nichrome alloy made of nickel and chromium. Cupronickel (copper and nickel) and Incoloy are different types of alloys in use presently. Incoloy is particularly suitable for heating hard water, unlike Nichrome or Cupronickel. The glass-lined Incoloy element is even better.

Heating Coil

In principle, a heating element is very similar to the filament of an incandescent bulb. Electrical current is forced through a metal alloy wire that has high resistance. Due to the resistance, it creates heat as the electrons collide with each other.

The element looks simple enough from the outside – a U-shaped prong with electrical connectors at the end. Inside the prong, there are thousands of turns of high resistance wire.

Heating Element

Since geyser elements need to produce a lot of heat, the power consumption is high and close to 2000 watts for most models with a tank (which means a water heater consumes 2 units of electricity if it is working for an hour). More powerful models may have a 3000-watt element.

2. Tank

The tank, as the name implies, is the water reservoir. Cold water enters through the inlet pipe and is heated by the element inside the tank. The warm water remains in the tank until it is drained out as needed.

3. Material

Since the tank stores water, it may become corroded over time. That is why the material from which it is constructed is important.

  • Copper: Copper tanks are resilient to corrosion. However, since copper is an excellent conductor of heat, there is water cooling down quickly. Also, copper is a quite expensive raw material, which has caused it to be replaced by other materials.
  • Stainless Steel: It is better at retaining heat when compared to copper and also cheaper. But steel is prone to corrosion over time.
  • Thermoplastic: Thermoplastic tanks are cheaper and do not corrode or transfer heat. But they are not durable, and the material may not last more than a few years.
  • The constant heating and cooling are not conducive to the long life of anything that is not made of metal. It is to be noted that there are a vast number of plastics in use, and each has slightly different characteristics.

4. Coating

A coating is applied to the inside walls of the tank for corrosion resistance and insulation. The most popular coating is vitreous enamel, which is created from powdered glass. It is resistant to corrosion and does not transfer heat easily.

Some manufacturers use a polymer coating. Polymers are synthetic substances that can be coated or painted on the inside of a tank. Note that geysers often have external skin made of durable plastic. This outer layer prevents heat loss and also adds to the aesthetics. From the outside, therefore, a copper or steel or thermoplastic geyser could look the same.

In some models, the space between the inner tank and the outer shell is packed with polyurethane foam (PUF) for better insulation.

5. Thermostat

A thermostat is a switch that turns a circuit on or off depending on temperature. They are present in air conditioners, refrigerators, and geysers.

The thermostat in a water heater turns off the power when the water is warm enough. Say at a temperature of 20° C you turned on the geyser to heat the water to 60°C (the preset in most geysers). At the desired temperature, the thermostat will turn the element off to save power.

When the water cools down to say 50°C, the thermostat will turn the element on again. It will keep going through the on/off cycles until the main power button is switched off.

Instant vs Storage Geysers: The Difference

Instant geysers have made an appearance in the last few years. Instant geysers, as the name suggests, heat water quickly. The downside is that they hold very little water – usually around 3 liters. You can have warm water for shaving or washing your face in less than three minutes.

They do not store warm water and therefore do not need expensive coatings. This makes Instant geysers quite cheap. The drawback is that the amount of warm water they provide is very little. Three liters of warm water will drain out of the tap in less than a minute and is hardly enough for bathing. Assuming equal quantities of warm and cold water are mixed, it amounts to no more than six liters.

Thus, you may need to operate them several times if needed, and they are ideally suited for kitchens and washbasins.

On the other hand, storage geysers are larger and not only heat water but also try to keep it as warm as possible. They have a capacity of up to 25 liters and are meant for a family of 1-4 members. They are larger, have a coated tank, and also have a mechanism that allows them to keep switching on and off at regular intervals. This makes them more expensive.

Factors Affecting the Consumption of Electricity

Frequency of Usage of Geyser: Simply put, the annual electricity consumption by your geyser will depend on how often you use it and how long you use it. In cooler climates, geysers are used throughout the year, while in warmer plains, the geysers are used only for a couple of months in winter. Correspondingly, this affects consumption levels.

Tank Capacity of Geyser: Instant water heaters with low tank capacities use a high wattage coil for short periods of time as the amount of water they must heat isn’t a lot. On the other hand, a storage heater has large tanks attached which need a large amount of energy to heat up to a desirable temperature. The size of the tank affects energy consumption.

The Difference in Temperature of Water: (the difference between initial and final water temperature): The greater the difference between the supply of water and the desired water temperature, the more energy the geyser will consume. The ambient temperature is pretty high in summers, so when you use a geyser, it can very easily push up the water temperature. In winters though freezing, water needs to be heated to higher temperatures, which requires a large amount of energy.

Standing Loss/24 Hrs (in kWh): After steady-state conditions have been achieved, a water heater with a full tank connected to an electrical supply continues to draw energy even if no additional amount of water is drawn. This adds to consumption levels.

A BEE 5Star rated 100L geyser has a standing loss of 1 unit per day, while a BEE 3star geyser has a standing loss of 1.5 units a day.

Electrical Consumption Estimate

This depends on inlet water temperature, the surrounding air temperature, and the volume of warm water needed. Due to numerous variables, it is hardly a straightforward calculation.

The formula is: Change in temperature * Volume of water * 4.2/3600

It is hard to estimate how much water is needed because it is a matter of personal preference.

Nonetheless, we can make some assumptions below.

  • Bucket bath requires 15 liters of water per person.
  • A shower bath needs 25 liters of water per person.
  • Washing clothes requires 10 liters per person.
  • Washing utensils requires  5 liters per person.

Thus, if four members in a family take bucket baths, it will require 15 x 4 = 60 liters of water.

Assume that the ambient temperature is 20° C and the water temperature required for a comfortable bath is 50° C and the calculation is:

60 * (50 – 20) * 4.2/3600 = 2.1 units of electricity (approximately.)

The equation has other variables in real life, including standing loss (that is, how much heat is lost by the storage tank). If the water heater is kept on for several hours for hot water on demand, then standing loss could be about 1.5 to 2 units daily.

There is no way to arrive at a perfect number since the ambient temperature, amount of water required, and standing loss plays such a vital role, and all of them vary considerably.

In summary, using about 60 liters of warm water daily would need between 4 and 6 units per day if the ambient temperature is 20° C., But this also assumes the water heater is always on, which is rarely the case. It is turned on at 6 AM and turned off at 10 AM after 4 hours of use in most homes.

But consider that between November and February, due to winter, in North India, ambient temperature for most of the day is far less than 20° C, and you are looking at a larger outlay for power consumed.

1. Mount Type

Traditionally geysers have a vertical or longitudinal mount. Some new devices have a horizontal mount. This requires less headroom but needs latitudinal space. Consider this type of water heater if your bathroom has a ceiling height of fewer than 9 ft or a false ceiling.

2. Wattage

The higher the wattage, the faster the geyser will heat the water. All other things being the same, a 3000-watt water heater will be twice as quick as a 1500-watt device. It is not necessary that a 3000-watt geyser consumes more power and is, therefore, more costly to run.

It is the amount of hot water and the degree of change, which matters not how powerful the element is.

If you have a large family and you need a lot of hot water quickly in the morning, it is best to opt for a geyser with a 3000-watt rating.

3. Energy Efficiency

Electric geysers have a star rating tab similar to those found on air conditioners and refrigerators. The more the number of stars, the greater is the energy efficiency of the device.

Instant geysers are more energy-efficient since they do not store water. Buy the model with the highest star rating as long as it is inside your budget.

4. Pressure

This is not necessary to bother about if your home has less than five floors. But for multi-storied buildings, the pressure rating has to be checked, and it must ideally be between 6 and 8 bars. Otherwise, the water heater may develop a leak due to high pressure.

5. Other Desirable Features

Like all other appliances, more expensive water heater models have premium features that separate them. These are some of the most desirable features.

  • Variable Thermostat Geysers: Less expensive models will always heat water to 60° C by default. More expensive models have a selector or knob to step this upper limit down to 50° C. Most of us have a bath with water at about 45° C, so an adjustable geyser saves expenses.
  • Glass-lined Incoloy Element: Lasts the longest among all types of elements and is excellent for heating hard water.
  • Self-Diagnosis: This type of water heater can detect problems and communicate via error messages that it displays on the LCD. This makes the repair easier.
  • LCD Display: Some up-market geyser models are equipped with an LCD to show the set temperature and current water temperature and energy consumption.
  • Remote: An infrared remote is handy for turning a geyser on or off from outside the bathroom. The latest geysers may be an IoT device controlled by a smartphone using Bluetooth or Wifi. Unlike a conventional IR remote, an IoT enabled water heater will not need a line of sight to operate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I install a water geyser myself?

Installation requires a stop cock and a connection nipple. These have to be assembled with zinc oxide paste. Moreover, the geyser needs to be mounted on sturdy brackets. This means digging into the walls with a chisel. It is a job that is best done by a professional technician from the company or provided by the dealer.

What is hard water?

Hard water is water with dissolved calcium and magnesium. Water in many Indian cities is hard water. It leaves deposits called scales inside the geyser that have to be removed from time to time.

How long does a geyser last?

A geyser has no moving parts. If it does not spring a leak, then it can easily last a decade. The biggest enemy of a water heater is corrosion, and obviously, it lasts less in coastal areas. If the element burns out, it can be easily replaced.

Do geysers make noise?

Yes! Like the mixer grinders, It is normal for geysers to make mild popping sounds as they heat and cool. It is startling but not dangerous. The scales inside can also contribute to its noisiness by emitting hissing sound as they absorb water or dry out.

How do I know if my geyser is working?

Unless it is an IoT device, geysers like bulbs are a simple device. They either work or they don’t. If they are working but seem to be taking longer and longer, it means a plumber needs to descale the interior.

How to deal with leaks?

Immediately turn off the power to the geyser. If possible, get a chair, reach the stop cock and turn it off by rotating it clockwise. Call maintenance services or the company helpline. It has to be noted that repairing a geyser requires both an understanding of plumbing and electricity. Your local plumber or electrician might not be able to cope with the problem.

What is an ISI mark?

A BIS or ISI mark means the model has been subjected to rigorous quality tests specified by the Government of India. Do not buy a product without the ISI logo, as the mark’s absence means it is substandard.

Useful Tips for Instant Water Heaters

  • Do not buy unbranded geysers. Geysers use extraordinarily high power (even more than an air conditioner) and have to be manufactured with extreme care.
  • Ensure that the product has an ISI stamp.
  • Buy a water heater with as high a star rating from BEE as the budget allows.
  • Find out if it has an adjustable thermostat. Reducing the set temperature to 50° C saves on the electricity bill.
  • Does it have a fail-safe to prevent dry heating? The element is meant to work only when it is submerged. Some geysers have a mechanism to ensure the element is protected if there is no water and the geyser is turned on.
  • Try to buy a geyser with at least a 2-year comprehensive warranty.

Verdict

The Crompton Solarium DLX SWH815 15-Litre is the clear winner as far as our tests and usage displayed. It is priced very reasonably and has a solid build. This versatile geyser can keep water warm for a very long time and has a BEE 5 Star rating! Rated at 8 bars, you can install it in any building without fear of leaks popping up.

Moreover, Crompton Greaves is a trusted name in India as far as household appliances are concerned, and you will be sure to find spare parts and service centers easily.

A close second is the American Micronic AMI WHM3 25LDx 25-litres Imported Water Heater due to its 25-liter capacity and three-step 800w/1200w/2000w regulator. The sole drawback of which we could not give it the first spot was a 2-year comprehensive warranty.
